  • Title: Beyond the Disease: A Qualitative Study of Psychological Impact and Coping Strategies Among TB Patients in Mardan

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is a severe communicable disease that can impact patients' physical, social, and mental health. The current study aims to explore the psychological effects and coping strategies of Mardan's tuberculosis patients through a qualitative approach. The study used purposive sampling to select a sample of 10 males and 5 females being treated for tuberculosis in the TB Hospital in Baghdad and the Mardan Medical Complex (MMC). In-depth interviews were conducted to gather information. Thematic analysis, as described by Braun and Clarke (2006), was used for data analysis. The results revealed several themes, including initial feelings of fear and shock upon diagnosis, depression and anxiety, fear of death and negative thinking, and social isolation and loneliness. The analysis also identified patients' coping mechanisms, such as religious and spiritual practices, positive thoughts about recovery, and motivation to undergo treatment. External support from family and friends and encouragement were important in coping, whereas stigma and family attitudes were shown to harm patients' emotional and social well-being and their identity. This research builds on the Theory of Stigma of Erving Goffman (1963) and the Stress and Coping Theory of Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman (1984) to understand stigma's influence on identity and the coping strategies used by patients. This research underscores the need for psychological and social support in tuberculosis treatment programs to enhance patients' well-being and treatment outcomes.
